Fibromyalgia and TMD

The temporomandibular joints connect the jaw to the skull. Temporomandibular joint disorder, customarily shortened as TMJ or TMD, appertains to a condition distinguished by discomfort or sensitivity in and/or around these joints. The primary symptoms utilized in diagnosing TMJ disorder are discomfort in the ligaments and muscles that stabilize the temporomandibular joints, agony connected with the joints themselves and clicking sounds when opening or closing the mouth. The causes of TMJ are not well documented but jaw stress is usually acknowledged as a predisposing factor. Metastatic inflammation, anxiousness and stress are also widely cited as conditions linked with TMJ.

These inflamed areas can act as trigger points which set off discomfort responses in other body parts. This is often known as "referred pain".

In the last decade, 1 or 2 studies have been conducted on possible correlations between fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and temporomandibular joint aberrations. Some research has focused on subject populations in which TMJ took place prior to the onset of fibromyalgia while others have concentrated on fibromyalgia as a predisposing condition. Among the latter, a recent Brazilian study inspected a population of fibromyalgic patients to evaluate the prevalence and frequency of signs and symptoms associated with TMJ disorders. The study was conducted on a sample population of sixty subjects of both sexes, all of whom had been formerly diagnosed as going through protracted fibromyalgia. Utilising the Research Diagnosing Criteria for TMD, all the subjects were examined for suggestions of TMD.

The reported results indicate a high level of predominance of TMD signs and symptoms. According to the principal researchers, the study's observations signify a need for the development of integrated diagnosis and treatment protocols to better address the needs of fibromyalgic patients displaying TMD symptoms. The writers also suggest that fibromyalgia could be characterized as a medium or long-term risk factor for the development of TMD.

How Fibromyalgia and Obesity are Connected

Everyone knows that being healthy is critical for those who are suffering from protracted discomfort and fibromyalgia. This message is all over my Facebook page, Twitter, and my blog content BUT now there's more explanation! Eating healthy with moving and stretching is SO important to relieving your daily pain!

A new study in The Journal of Pain reports there's a close association between obesity and disability in fibro patients!

Researchers hypothesised that obesity adds to the load of the condition. After evaluating 215 fibromyalgia patients (who were given one or two physical tests and after assessing heart rates and sleep quality), they revealed that they were correct.

The authors of the study noted that (as consistent with prior studies) obesity is not unusual among those with fibromyalgia. Additionally , overweight patients in this research showed increased discomfort sensitivity and diminished pliability in the lower body. These same patients also showed reduced strength.

Whoa! Not only does being overweight damage flexibility and reduce strength and it shows that the patient has increased discomfort sensitiveness!

The study goes on to say that, "recent evidence suggests weight loss improves fibromyalgia symptoms, perhaps coming from patients adopting healthier life-styles and taking more positive angles toward symptom management, and overall quality of life."

Okay, so now we see that being fat has a negative result on your fibromyalgia. The following step is to work out what to do to start to work toward a happier and healthier life!

Stop targeting fibromyalgia and start targeting your health!

When you begin focusing on your fitness you can start making a difference in your health at this time!

Begin to cut out bad and repellent foods and kick your soda pop habit - That stuff is POISONING your body. When you eat better, you feel better.

Start moving and stretching each day! I know, this sounds virtually impossible but start small and work your way up. You do not have to run a marathon - Just work up a sweat everyday. That may be by walking down the steps or strolling round the block. It doesn't matter what you do, so long as your building up a sweat. Be certain to not go overboard either! Your body might be sore at the start but keep doing a touch more each time you move and stretch! It will pay off!
